NCAA Tournament Scores: South Dakota State Goes Up 12 Early, Bears Claw Back To Take Lead

The 14th-seeded South Dakota St. Jackrabbits jumped out to perhaps the most surprising lead of the tournament so far, leading the No. 3 Baylor Bears by 12 early in the first half behind the inspired play of their star, Nate Wolters. The Bears stormed back, though, behind sparkplug point guard Pierre Jackson and seldom-used senior forward Anthony Jones. The Bears lead at intermission, 36-28.

Jones scored 11 points in the first half — he averages five per game on the season — and Jackson scored 12 to lead everyone. Perry Jones III, a projected lottery pick and the Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year, has been held scoreless and found himself on the bench for an extended stretch in the first half. Big 12 Freshman of the Year Quincy Miller has just two points, as well.

Wolters scored nine points in the first half, but he had eight through 10 minutes as his shot went cold along with that of his teammates. After coming out absolutely on fire, the Jackrabbits’ shooting percentage fell to 37.5 percent at the half. You have to wonder if they have another run in them to come back.
