Florida’s Jeff Demps Won’t Enter 2012 NFL Draft, Opts To Pursue Track

Florida Gators speedster Jeff Demps will forgo the 2012 NFL Draft in pursuit of his track career. The diminutive back racked up 569 yards rushing and six touchdowns this season.

Florida Gators running back Jeff Demps will not be entering the 2012 NFL Draft, instead opting to pursue his career in track. Demps was explosive as a Gator, averaging at least 5.8 yards per carry in each of his four seasons. His diminutive size--just 5-7, 191 lbs.--made it unlikely for him to be an every down back at the next level, however. He never had more than 99 carries in any season at Florida.

Demps competed in track for the Gators following the 2009 and 2010 football seasons, and is expected to compete this spring. In 2009, he ran the anchor leg in the 4x100 team that won the SEC Championships with a time of 38.74 seconds. The following year, he won the 60 meters competition at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, as well as the 100 meters at the Outdoor Championships. The latter he clocked in at a personal best 9.96 seconds.
