The Washington Redskins sent their first-round pick in the 2012 NFL draft, two future first-round picks and another draft pick to the St. Louis Rams for the No. 2 overall pick, otherwise known as the Robert Griffin III pick. The trade can't become official until the new league year starts on Tuesday.
Redskins-Rams Trade Splits Fan Opinions
This is a major, major move with serious cost involved for the Redskins. SB Nation’s Kevin Ewoldt writes on Hogs Haven that the Redskins have given up too much in the trade. I can agree with him in that it does seem like a lot. But if RG3 turns into a perennial Pro Bowler, those extra first round picks will be forgotten quickly. The quarterback is by far the hardest piece of the puzzle to acquire, and the Redskins may have done that here. If RG3 is the real deal, adding talent to the team becomes much easier down the road.
That said, it’s a hefty price and not all Redskins fans agree with it. In fact, they’re about split. In a poll over at Hogs Haven with more than 1,500 voters, 53 percent of voters agree that it was the right move and 47 percent say it was the wrong move.
Rams fans, on the other hand, love the move. Over at Turf Show times, 90 percent of more than 1,400 voters call it an “excellent” move.
Time will tell, but in the end I think Washington had to make this move. If the Redskins don't make it, someone else trades into the Rams spot and selects RG3, the Browns potentially end up taking Ryan Tannehill at the fourth pick and the Skins would then be in serious trouble at the quarterback position. Giving $60+ million to Matt Flynn would be an option, and I don't think they want to do that. Given the options, I can agree with the decision to move up.
