2012 NFL Draft: Alshon Jeffery Impresses With Pro Day 40 Times

South Carolina wide receiver Alshon Jeffery may have given his stagnating draft stock a big boost on Wednesday. Working out at his school's pro day event in front of representatives from a number of NFL teams, Jeffery was clocked at 4.38 seconds in the 40-yard dash, according to Kevin Weidl of ESPN.

Jeffery was once regarded as one of the top prospects at his position in the 2012 NFL Draft. A disappointing season with the Gamecocks in 2011 and rumors about his conditioning conspired to push him down draft boards in the eyes of many.

The South Carolina receiver did not participate in drills at the Combine in February. He did answer some questions about his overall shape when he weighed a respectable 216 pounds. At his pro day, Jeffery weighed 213 pounds. Tony Pauline of SI.com cited sources from two AFC teams that said Jeffery would not be drafted until the middle part of the second round following the Combine.

Weidl’s time is unofficial, and he later reported talking to NFL scouts who had Jeffery clocked in the 4.4 to 4.5 range, which is still very positive for him. Expect the debate about Jeffery’s draft status and NFL future to heat up in weeks before the draft.
