The Minnesota Vikings selected former Notre Dame Fighting Irish free safety Harrison Smith as the No. 29 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft.

Prior to the draft, Smith was considered one of the top safeties in this year’s talent pool. Here is what Mocking the Draft had to say about Smith:

Strengths: Has a nice build and is strong inside the box. Closes on the ball carrier in a hurry and is often a sure tackler. Gets into the backfield routinely. Reads the play well. Team leader. Highly productive. Finished his career with 309 tackles, 28 pass break ups and seven interceptions.

Weaknesses: Not the best when asked to drop back in coverage and doesn’t have the athleticism to stick with receivers in man situations. Tries too often to go for the kill shot and will miss the tackle. May need to add some strength to play the run better.
