2012 NFL Mock Draft: Texans Pick Up WR To Pair With Andre Johnson

With the 58th pick in SB Nation's 2012 NFL mock draft, the Houston Texans select California WR Marvin Jones.

One of the goals for the Texans this year was finding another weapon in the passing game outside of Andre Johnson. That takes the pressure off of Johnson, who is one of the best receivers in the NFL. This is a solid pick.

SB Nation’s Battle Red Blog explains the pick:

The deficiency in Houston’s receiving corps is well-documented. After Andre Johnson, the Texans have a solid veteran who may be losing a step (Kevin Walter), a guy who follows up a highlight play with three bad ones (Jacoby Jones), and no one else ready to develop. It’s not a matter of if Gary Kubiak will take a wide receiver but when and how many. Since it’s our call, Battle Red Blog takes Marvin Jones in Round 2.

Off many people’s radars in January, Jones has steadily improved his stock with a strong Senior Bowl week and great Combine. He’s got everything the Texans value in a wide receiver: the ability to play in the slot or outside, the route-running skills that’ll mesh well in the West Coast Offense and the size that the front office prefers. As a side note, the Texans have had 10 receivers catch a pass in the Kubiak Era, seven were 6’0”, 200 pounds or larger, which Jones is.

All said, Jones fits what the organization wants, improves a weak receiving corps, and should make Houston fans happy.
