NFL Draft Grades: Cowboys’ Trade For Morris Claiborne Was Worth It

The Dallas Cowboys traditionally bring their first round picks into their facility for a pre-draft visit if they're going to draft them. They didn't do that with LSU CB Morris Claiborne, yet still pulled off a stunning draft on the first day of the 2012 NFL Draft. The Cowboys sent their second round pick and the No. 14 overall pick to St. Louis for the Rams' No. 6 overall pick.

The Cowboys then selected Claiborne, the top cornerback in the draft. No one saw this coming, and I think it was a great move by the Cowboys. In general, I’m not in favor of trading up for players that don’t play quarterback, but the cost involved with this one -- a second round pick -- was less than similar trades in the past. This was a bargain for the Cowboys. Claiborne is considered one of just a few truly blue chip talents in the draft.

The Cowboys also added CB Brandon Carr in free agency, so in just a matter of weeks they completely revamped their secondary. That's why I think the Cowboys deserve some praise here. It's hard to turn a position of weakness into a position of strength in just one offseason. Adding Claiborne instantly made the Cowboys better.

Overall, I’d give the Cowboys a B for the draft.
