2012 NFL Draft, Janoris Jenkins: Red Flags Too Much For Detroit Lions

Word out of Detroit is that the Lions are unlikely to take a chance on North Alabama cornerback Janoris Jenkins with their first-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. According to a Saturday report in the Detroit Free Press, the brass in Detroit acknowledges Jenkins' talent, but is leery of his off-field issues.

Jenkins has a pair of marijuana arrests, something that the Lions are all too familiar with lately. Three of their players have been arrested since the end of the season. Running back Mikel Leshoure was arrested twice in the span of one month, and he now faces felony charges. That factors into the team's thinking the report says.

Talent is not a question at all for Jenkins. In fact, NFL Films guru Greg Cosell called the former Florida star the “best pure man cover corner in draft.

News this week that Jenkins changed agents is unlikely to help his draft stock. Super agent Ben Dogra and Jenkins parted ways, and the cornerback signed with Malik Shareef, per Liz Mullen. A Saturday tweet from Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel said that Jenkins was actually dropped by Dogra. If that is in fact the case, it could spell trouble on draft day for Jenkins.

Nevertheless, some teams will be willing to take a chance on Jenkins. Both the Indianapolis Colts and St. Louis Rams have pre-draft visits scheduled with Jenkins.
