Stevie Johnson, Bills ‘Far Apart’; Franchise Tag Unlikely?

Buffalo Bills' wide receiver Steve Johnson is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent in the 2012 NFL offseason, but the two parties are planning to exchange contract proposals at the NFL combine. As it stands, the Buffalo Bills and Johnson are "far apart" in contract negotiations, according to a report by the Associated Press.

A person familiar with the contract talks between the Buffalo Bills and Stevie Johnson said the two sides remain “far apart,” and added that the receiver doesn’t expect the team to use its franchise tag to retain him.

The report states that the Bills are unlikely to place the franchise tag on Johnson, which would pay him between $9.4 million and $9.8 million guaranteed for the season. Johnson has led the Bills in receiving the past two season, gaining over 1,000 yards receiving in back-to-back seasons. If the two sides cannot come to an agreement before NFL free agency begins on March 13, Johnson is expected to have plenty of suitors.
