Arizona Cardinals defensive end Calais Campbell is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent as of March 13, but the team is expected to slap the franchise tag on him if they cannot reach a long-term extension. The deadline for teams to use the franchise tag is March 5, and while there is nothing official regarding Campbell as of Friday afternoon, Darren Urban at the official Cardinals blog reported several weeks ago that general manager Rod Graves said the talented defensive end will be back with the team in 2012.

The 25-year old Campbell is coming off a career-high eight sacks and 10 passes defended in 2011, and will cost the team $10.6 million in 2012 if he receives the franchise tag. He has spent his entire career in Arizona after being selected in the second round (No. 50 overall) by the franchise in the 2008 NFL draft.
