Freddy Garcia’s Mystery Pitch

Maybe you remember it. Last April, Garcia threw a split-fingered fastball that behaved nothing like any split-fingered fastball we'd ever seen before. Or, presumably, that Garcia had ever thrown before. And probably never threw again.

↵Anyway, you gotta see the video and read Dr. Alan Nathan’s scientific dissection. It’s wild stuff.

↵But I’m not surprised to see the knuckleball enter the discussion. As I discuss in this book, the forkball -- which has disappeared in favor of the splitter -- was often described as behaving very much like a knuckleball. I think Garcia accidentally threw an old-fashioned forker.
