Ken Rosenthal reported on Saturday that the Angels had locked up second baseman Howie Kendrick to a four-year extension. While the initial reaction was that it seemed like a good deal, it was hard to know without the numbers. A four year, $800 million extension would probably lead to the Angels being sold at a public auction, for example.

However you look at it, it’s an amazingly low-risk, high-reward extension for a 28-year-old second baseman coming off a career year. Second basemen tend to age like peeled avocados, but the Angels did well to avoid tethering themselves to Kendrick too deep into his 30s.
