North Texas knocks off UL Lafayette with wild finish

The Mean Green went deep to down the Ragin’ Cajuns at home on Tuesday night.

The North Texas Mean Green overcame a 14-point deficit to defeat the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns in primetime on Tuesday night.

After Ragin' Cajuns senior placekicker Brett Baer knocked in a 47-yard field goal to tie the contest at 23 with about three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Mean Green turned a 3rd-and-8 from their own 22-yard line into a 78-yard touchdown strike, as quarterback Derek Thompson connected with freshman running back Antoinne Jimmerson, giving North Texas the 30-23 lead.

On the following possession, Louisiana-Lafayette quarterback Terrance Broadway hit running back Effrem Reed, who then fumbled the completion after North Texas defensive back Zac Whitfield jostled the ball loose. The Mean Green recovered on the Ragin' Cajuns' 32-yard line and ran out the remainder of the clock from there.

With the victory, North Texas improves to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the Sun Belt Conference, while Louisiana-Lafayette drops to 4-2 on the season with an identical 2-1 Sun Belt record. The loss also knocks the Ragin’ Cajuns from the ranks of the undefeated in Sun Belt action, leaving only Louisiana-Monroe and Western Kentucky at 2-0 in conference play.
