Oregon State vs. Washington final score: Huskies upset No. 7 Beavers, 20-17

Oregon State was playing catch-up with the Washington Huskies all game. Despite coming back and tying the game twice, the Beavers lost, 20-17.

Saturday night would have been a perfect time for No. 7 Oregon State to make its move up the BCS rankings. Florida and conference rival USC were both upset earlier in the day. All the Beavers had to do was beat unranked Washington. That turned out to be easier said than done. The Huskies handed Oregon State its first loss of the season in a 20-17 upset.

The Huskies would do all the scoring in the first half. Travis Coons kicked a field goal from 45 yards away in the first quarter and leading rusher Bishop Sankey ran for a one-yard touchdown in the second. Washington took its 10-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Despite a touchdown throw in the third, Oregon State quarterback Sean Mannion did not have a good night. Mannion was 18-for-34 for a respectable 221 yards, but also threw for a glaring four interceptions. The Beavers would tie the game up at 10-10 after the third, but Mannion did not complete the game with his teammates.

Taking over for Mannion in the fourth quarter was backup Cody Vaz. By the time Vaz entered the game, the Huskies had regained the lead on Sankey's second touchdown of the night. Vaz took the Beavers down field, scoring on a 29 yard pass to Connor Hamlett to tie it up again with 4:58 remaining in the game. Washington quarterback Keith Price drove his team to the Oregon State 12 yard line where kicker Coons knocked in a 30-yard field goal with 1:30 left.

At 3rd and 10 on the Washington 38, Oregon State backup quarterback Vaz was sacked by the Huskies Talia Crichton for a four-yard loss, putting Oregon State at the Washington 42. After a time out by the Beavers with 25 seconds on the clock, Oregon State took a five-yard delay of game penalty pushing the team back to the Washington 47. Now at 4th and 19, Vaz threw an incomplete pass to Kevin Cummings, sealing the upset for the Huskies.

Box Score Hero: Sankey scored the Huskies’ only two touchdowns of the night. Both trips to the endzone came on one-yard rushes. In total, Sankey rushed for 92 yards on 25 carries, to lead the Huskies.

Rankings Ramifications: Being upset by an unranked opponent doesn’t look good to the robot that calculates BCS rankings. The Beavers will drop out of the top 10, but not by too much.

But Did They Cover? Oregon State was favored by five, so no they did not cover.

Next Week’s Schedule: On Friday, Washington heads to Berkley to face Cal. Saturday, the Beavers welcome the Arizona State Sun Devils to town.
