Yankees exercise Granderson, Cano options

Two Yankee stalwarts will remain in pinstripes in 2013.

David Butler II-US PRESSWIRE

The New York Yankees got virtually no production from center fielder Curtis Granderson and second baseman Robinson Cano during the postseason. Granderson went 3-for-32; Cano was even worse at 3-for-40. The lack of production from those two was one of the biggest reasons for New York's third straight early exit from the playoffs.

Nevertheless, they’ll remain Yankees, at least for one more year:

Cano will make $15 million in 2013; Granderson will also take in $15 million. Granderson’s regular-season production declined in 2012; his OPS dropped from .916 to .811 even while he was setting a career high in home runs (43). Cano had a productive 2012, hitting .313/.379/.550 with 33 home runs, but inexplicably stopped hitting in October.

The third player mentioned in the tweet above, reliever David Aardsma, missed almost the entire 2012 season after Tommy John surgery; he appeared in one late-season game. The Yankees hope the 30-year-old former Mariners closer will bolster their bullpen in 2013.
