From Bob Nightengale’s passionate argument for Miguel Cabrera as Most Valuable Player:

It’s also time to stop with the defensive comparison. No one is arguing that Trout is a better defensive center fielder than Cabrera is a third baseman.

Really? No one is arguing that the likely Gold Glove center fielder is better than the adequate-at-best third baseman?

I think Nightengale’s been victimized by his editor. I’m going to rewrite that second sentence, and add the next few (as published, except for an initial “But” that I’m adding) paragraphs for context:

It’s also time to stop with the defensive comparison. No one is arguing that Cabrera is a better third baseman than Trout is a center fielder.

But remember that Cabrera is the one who moved to third base, after a five-year layoff, to make room for free agent Prince Fielder. Cabrera is hardly a Gold Glove nominee, but he has startled scouts with his adequacy.

So now we’re going to penalize Cabrera for moving from first base?

Uh-uh. Doesn’t work that way.

Makes more sense that way, right? Giving Cabrera extra credit for moving to third base and not being dreadful there, while also acknowledging that of course he’s not anything like the fielder that Trout is?

You should read the whole piece. See for yourself how much sense the rest of it makes.
