A’s Braden outrighted, becomes free agent

Dallas Braden once told A-Rod to get off his mound. And he threw a perfect game. If his career is over, it’s pretty memorable.

Two years ago, the Athletics' Dallas Braden made baseball history when he threw a perfect game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Since then, Braden’s career has been mostly spent in doctors’ offices; he had shoulder surgery in 2011 and did not pitch at all in 2012.

If he pitches at all in 2013, it will be for another team:

Left-handed pitcher Dallas Braden and right-handed pitcher Joey Devine cleared outright waivers and elected free agency rather than accept an outright assignment to Triple-A Sacramento, the A's announced Tuesday.

Braden has had two shoulder surgeries, including one on his rotator cuff in August 2011. At 29, if healthy, he could still put up some decent major-league seasons. But if he doesn’t pitch again, addition to his perfect game, Braden will be remembered for claiming the Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez broke an “unwritten rule” by running across the mound returning to first base after a foul ball:

“He just told me to get off his mound,” Rodriguez said. “That was a little surprising. I’d never quite heard that, especially from a guy that has a handful of wins in his career.
“I didn’t even know he was talking to me. I’ve never heard of that in my career. I still don’t know. I thought it was pretty funny, actually.“Which Braden will you remember?
