Angels sign Chris Iannetta to three-year contract extension

The Los Angeles Angels will be hanging on to Chris Iannetta through the 2015 season after he signed a three-year contract extension on Thursday.

Tim Heitman-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

The Los Angeles Angels and catcher Chris Iannetta have come to terms on a new three-year contract extension that will keep him with the Halos thorough the 2015 season. The contract is valued at $15.5 million, per Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com.

The 29-year old Iannetta was acquired from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for right-handed pitcher Tyler Chatwood last winter. He batted .240 with nine home runs and 26 RBI in 79 games this season for the Angels, and missed 67 games after going on the disabled list with a fractured right wrist. He suffered the injury after being hit by a pitch May 2 against the Minnesota Twins, a game remembered for Jered Weaver's no-hitter.

Iannetta had a $5 million mutual option for 2013 before this contract extension.

The Providence, R.I., native was selected by the Rockies in the fourth round of the 2004 Draft out of the University of North Carolina. Iannetta has batted .236 with 78 doubles, 72 home runs, 262 RBI and a .354 on-base percentage in his seven-year career in the majors.
