Cal vs. Oregon State 2012 final score: Beavers score 9 TD’s, demolish Bears, 62-14

No. 16 Oregon State has lost two of its last three games. Feeling this is unacceptable for a team that started 6-0, the Beavers took out their aggressions on the Cal Bears.

The previous Saturday, No. 16 Oregon State lost a very close game to giant-killer Stanford, 27-24. This gave the Beavers their second loss on what used to be a perfect season. Determined not to drop any more games, the 7-2 Oregon State welcome the Cal Bears and proceeded to beat them up. Beavers make a statement against Cal by winning 62-14. This is Cal’s fifth straight loss.

Midway through the first quarter, Oregon State scored its first of nine touchdowns on the night. Beavers quarterback Sean Mannion threw a 11 yard pass to Markus Wheaton for the TD. Cal answered back with a 9 yard TD run by Isi Sofele, tying the game at 7-7. Oregon State broke the tie with five minutes remaining in the first quarter. Tyler Anderson rushed for 1 yard and the touchdown, regaining the lead for OSU, 14-7.

Anderson's touchdown began a scoring barrage by the Beavers. In the second, Sean Mannion factored into all three touchdowns scored. Brandin Cooks caught a 48 yard Mannion touchdown pass. Connor Hamlett followed Cooks lead and received a 14 yard pass from his QB for the touchdown. To close the half, Mannion threw 6 yards to Micah Hatfield, running the score up to 35-7.

The third quarter was more of the same. At 11:56, the Beavers' Storm Woods (winner of coolest CFB name) rushed one yard into the endzone. To put another nail on top of the nail already in the coffin, OSU's Terron Ward ran for 47 yards and the TD. The score is now 49-7. Cal quarterback Allan Bridgford didn't quit when the game was way out of hand. He scored Cal's final touchdown with a 1 yard run. The Bears were still down, but not by as much as before (positives!), 49-14.

Showing no mercy in the fourth, Oregon State scored its eighth touchdown. Terron Ward rushed 17 yards up the middle for the TD, his second of the game. With all these TD's, the Beavers' kicker, Trevor Romaine, has had a lot of work Saturday evening. Following Ward's TD, Romaine missed the point after. His leg must have been tired. As the minutes winded down, Oregon State replaced QB Sean Mannion with his backup Richie Harrington. Harrington wanted a piece of the action and completed a 8 yard pass to Malcom Agnew for a touchdown. This time the kicker made the extra point to deep freeze ice the game for Oregon State at 62-14.

Box Score Hero: Before being pulled when the game was clearly out of reach for Cal, Oregon State QB Sean Mannion completed 24 of 34 passing attempts for a total of 325 yards and 4 touchdowns. The only blemish on the night is his 1 interception.

Rankings Ramifications: No. 1 K-State and No. 2 Oregon earned their first losses of the season on Saturday, the magic elves that control the BCS rankings are going to be working overtime to re-rank the schools. Cal isn’t a ranked opponent, a factor that plays against No. 16Oregon State moving up, but some of Saturday’s losses could send them closer to the top 10.

But Did They Cover? Oregon State was favored by 15.5. Even that big of a points bump could get Cal remotely close to the Beavers.

Next Week’s Schedule: Cal has wrapped up their season and will be back in Berkley just in time for finals. The question is, will the head coach be back come spring practice? Oregon State has home-field advantage as they battle in-state rival, Oregon.
