Reds re-sign Jonathan Broxton for 3 years, $21 million

The big right-hander will take over for Aroldis Chapman as Cincinnati’s closer.

Frank Victores-US PRESSWIRE

Another day closer to the winter meetings, another closer off the market. Just hours after Ryan Madson reportedly agreed to a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Angels, his (sort of) former teammate Jonathan Broxton has re-signed with the Cincinnati Reds on a three-year, $21 million contract, per MLB.com.

The contract will pay Broxton $4 million in 2013, $7 million in 2014, and $9 million in 2015. The new deal also includes a club option of $9 million for a fourth season with a $1 million buyout.

Originally acquired by the Reds in an August trade for two minor-leaguers, Broxton, 28, will take the closer reins from young, flame-throwing left-hander Aroldis Chapman, whom the Reds will try moving into the rotation next season.

After two sub-par final years in the Dodgers' bullpen, Broxton regained his form in Kansas City filling in for the injured Joakim Soria. The big right-hander posted a 2.27 ERA and saved 23 games for the Royals before moving to Cincinnati late in the season, where he continued to pitch well, putting up a 2.82 earned-run average in 25 appearances down the stretch.
