Oh, these modern ballplayers and their money-grubbing ...

From an interview with one of baseball’s ex-superstars, 50 years ago:

Is there anything wrong with the game of baseball, in general?

I don’t have too much to gripe about as far as the playing of the game itself is concerned. But I do feel that baseball has become too commercial, especially regarding the players. Too many ballplayers, usually prompted by a business manager, or agent, become involved in a lot of projects for making money. As a result, sometimes the fact that they are first of all ballplayers is lost sight of.

That answer was provided by Bob Feller in 1962, when he’d been retired for about six years.

Of course, the hilarious thing is that in the years immediately after World War II, there was no player in the majors, and perhaps no professional athlete, who was involved in more projects for making money.
