Rockies manager search down to Weiss, Williams

Colorado is expected to name their new manager by week’s end.

US PRESSWIRE

The Colorado Rockies have narrowed their managerial search as far as they can without making a final decision, whittling their list of candidates down to two, Walt Weiss and Matt Williams. Weiss is the favorite to fill Colorado's managerial vacancy at the moment, but an impressive interview from Williams on Monday has given the Rockies' front office pause, per the Denver Post.

Neither Weiss nor Williams has a wealth of managerial or coaching experience. Weiss, a former All-Star shortstop, has just a coaching stint at his son's high school on his resume, while Williams served as third base coach for the Diamondbacks last season and is currently managing the Salt River Rafts in the the Arizona Fall League.

Colorado's list for manager was at four last week, but veteran first baseman Jason Giambi and Rockies' bench coach Tom Runnells have been eliminated from contention. The Rockies have shown interest in keeping Giambi in the organization as their hitting coach, but the veteran may continue playing now that a managing gig is out of the picture.
