eBay Item of the Day: Baseball...Timeless...

If you buy something from a link, Vox Media may earn a commission. See our ethics statement.

One of the great things about baseball is its continuity. Any modern baseball fan can look at this picture from the 1923 World Series and know immediately what’s going on: A base runner is in a pickle and the defenders are lining up to ensnare him. In this case, that runner is Babe Ruth and almost all of his pursuers are in the Hall of Fame. Frankie Frisch, Dave Bancroft and George Kelly are. Pitcher Art Nehf isn’t -- but umpire Billy Evans is.

For fun, here is the image presented two ways.

1. In its original state as offered on eBay.

2. With the field cleaned up so as not to offend modern sensibilities grown accustomed to the well-manicured playing surfaces of today and also with the personnel identified, like they used to do with wire photos.
