Gene Chizik could be fired ‘days after the end of the season,’ according to report

Auburn is still winless in conference play, and it appears that Auburn officials are discussing the possibility of head football coach Gene Chizik’s dismissal.

Auburn president Jay Gogue is considering firing head coach Gene Chizik after the conclusion of the 2012 season, according to reports, and it might come soon after the final game. Tigers football is going through a nightmare season just two years removed from a national championship, and many are calling for Chizik’s head, as the program has declined sharply after the departure of Heisman winner and No. 1 pick Cam Newton.

The move could come quickly, and Auburn officials are already looking into the process, as reported by by 247sports.com, via the Sporting News:

According to 247Sports.com, Gogue has contacted board members about forming a committee to help with the process of possibly removing Chizik and naming a new head coach “within days after the end of the season should the decision be made that Chizik will not be retained,” the site wrote.

The Tigers are just 2-7 on the year and 0-6 in SEC play. Chizik’s seat began to burn even hotter following a 63-21 trouncing at the hands of Texas A&M two weeks ago.

With No. 5 Georgia and No. 1 Alabama left on the schedule, it seems highly likely that Auburn will finish the year out winless in conference play. The program now has a losing record since their national championship victory over Oregon.
