Florida vs. Georgetown game called at half due to condensation on the court

Friday night’s game on the deck of the USS Bataan between Florida and Georgetown was canceled at the half after both teams agreed that the court was too wet to play on.

The Navy-Marine Corps Classic between the Florida Gators and Georgetown Hoyas was called at halftime due to safety concerns from condensation on the outdoor court of the USS Bataan.

The Gators were leading Georgetown, 27-23, at the half, but the game will not count or be made up in the future, reports Hays Carlyon of the Florida Times-Union. Additionally, none of the stats accumulated in the first half of play will count.

The coaches and officials agreed that it was unsafe to finish the game after they were unable to keep the court dry even with multiple delays.

Ohio State and Marquette’s game on the USS Yorktown in South Carolina was also called earlier in the day before it could even get started due to similar issues.

Friday’s turn of events could mark the end of marquee teams committing to these outdoor games and fans agreeing to pay a hefty sum for the tickets. The Associated Press’ Mark Long reported that tickets cost around $1,000 a pop. It’s currently unclear whether or not the 3,500 fans in attendance will get a refund.
