The NFL Players' Association said in a statement Saturday afternoon that it is staying in touch with Kansas City Chiefs players and offering its condolences to those affected by the shooting at Arrowhead Stadium earlier in the day.

Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend, Kasandra M. Perkins, Saturday morning before driving to Arrowhead Stadium and committing suicide in front of Chiefs coach Romeo Crennell and general manager Scott Pioli.

The statement read:

We are deeply saddened by the events today, and we have been in touch with the Kansas City Chiefs players. We offer our sincerest condolences to the families affected.

The Chiefs announced this afternoon that they intend to play Sunday's home game against the Carolina Panthers as scheduled, after discussing it with the league. The Associated Press reports that Crennel plans on coaching the game. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.

Belcher signed with the Chiefs prior to the 2009 season and had played in every Kansas City game since. He was 25.
