Ravens vs. Redskins 2012: Kirk Cousins the hero in Washington

Kirk Cousins led his team to victory with Robert Griffin III out, as the rookie backup led his team to a 31-28 win in overtime. Griffin will receive an MRI on his knee to see if Cousins will need to keep playing going forward.

The Washington Redskins lost their quarterback, but won an overtime thriller over the Baltimore Ravens with Kirk Cousins subbing in for an injured Robert Griffin III.

Griffin hurt his knee in the fourth quarter, and although he tried to keep playing with his team trailing, he had to leave after completing a pair of passes. But Cousins came in and completed both of his passing attempts, including a touchdown strike to Pierre Garcon, then ran in a two-point conversion on a QB draw to send the game into OT. After a stop, Richard Crawford returned a punt into field goal range, where Kai Forbath drilled the game-winner. Redskins blog Hogs Haven highlighted the trio of newcomers in their postgame recap:

Although the focus has been on Griffin all year, Cousins also appears to have been a nice find: RG3 was given the reins to the franchise with Cousins being taken in the fourth round out of Michigan State to play a backup role. He had to come in during Week 5 against the Atlanta Falcons when Griffin left the game with a concussion, but didn't make a good impression in his debut as he threw two picks. Crawford was also a rookie drafted in the seventh round.

Griffin will have an MRI to determine the severity of his injury, so it’s unclear whether Cousins will need to continue to play going forward.
