Apparently, overspending at Christmas is not a new concept, as this postcard from 1907 suggests. Home runs, “needed” or otherwise, were a rare commodity then. There were only 244 of them in all the major leagues that year. The White Sox hit just five as a team, down from seven the year before, a season in which they won the World Championship.
