Joel Hanrahan trade: Red Sox, Pirates complete deal

Hanrahan joins the Red Sox as insurance in their bullpen.

The deal for Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Joel Hanrahan is official, according to a tweet from Evan Drellich of MLB.com. Hanrahan and Brock Holt will be headed to the Boston Red Sox in return for Mark Melancon, Stolmy Pimentel, Ivan De Jesus and Jerry Sands.

The 30-year-old Hanrahan went 5-2 with a 2.72 ERA in 63 appearances for the Pirates last season. He gave up only 40 hits in 59.2 innings pitched while striking out 67. He accumulated 76 saves over the past two seasons for the Pirates while making the NL All-Star team.

Hanrahan makes sense for the Red Sox as current closer Andrew Bailey struggled last season both on the field and with injuries and Hanrahan provides the bullpen with some proven depth.

Pimentel is a minor league pitcher while Sands is a minor league first baseman/outfielder. Melancon pitched in 41 games for the Red sox last season with a 6.20 ERA in 45.0 innings pitched. De Jesus played in eight games for the Red Sox and 23 for the Dodgers in 2012. Holt played in 24 games for the Pirates last season and hit .292.
