Report: Angel Pagan re-signing with Giants for 4 years, $40 million

Veteran outfielder snags long-term deal after team-leading 95-run season.

Hey, here’s Example No. 37 that baseball teams now have bottomless cauldrons full of gold doubloons, and money-growing trees, and pennies -- lots and lots and lots of pennies -- from heaven.

Nobody's surprised that the Giants have reportedly agreed with Angel Pagan on a deal that will bring the free-agent outfielder back to San Francisco. After all, the 31-year-old outfielder, in his first season as a Giant, scored 95 runs and led the National League with 15 triples. Oh, and the Giants won the World Series. So that's all good.

What's surprising is that Pagan, if you believe the initial (i.e. Twitter) reports, is going to earn $40 million over the next four seasons. Keep in mind, we're talking about (again) a 31-year-old who's played more than 123 games in a season just twice in his career, and just a year ago was essentially treated as surplus talent by the Mets.

To Pagan’s and the Giants’ credit, though, he did play quite well last season. No, maybe he’s not a Gold Glove-quality center fielder. And yes, the Giants are buying into a declining market. But he’s a solid major leaguer who should help the club some over the next few years. These days, that really is worth $10 million.
