Joakim Soria reportedly signing with Rangers for 2 years, $8 million

Ed Zurga

According to Master of Information Jon Heyman, the Texas Rangers have signed ex-Royals closer Joakim Soria for two years and $8 million. According to MLB.com's Alden Gomez, there's a third year on the deal, at the team's option.

Just a year ago, Soria ranked as one of the top relief pitchers in the majors. But then he came up lame during spring training, and shortly after Opening Day underwent Tommy John surgery to replace a torn ligament in his pitching elbow. Soria’s not expected back on a major-league mound until May or perhaps later, but does address a need. Via Evan Grant:

The Rangers need to fill holes in the bullpen because Alexi Ogando has moved to the rotation and Mike Adams and Koji Uehara are both free agents. The Rangers retain some interest in Uehara, but the addition of Soria could make him a secondary priority.

This was Soria’s second TJS, which must not worry the Rangers much if they’re willing to wager $8 million that it won’t happen again. Or at least not in the next two years.
