Jason Isringhausen Lands With Angels

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have signed ageless reliever Jason Isringhausen to a minor-league contract.

The talk for a while has been that the Los Angeles Angels wanted to add one more potential late-inning arm to the bullpen. They didn't sign Francisco Cordero. They didn't sign Ryan Madson. They didn't sign a lot of other guys. But Wednesday, they've pounced, if you want to consider this pouncing:

That's the 39-year-old Jason Isringhausen. Not some other Jason Isringhausen. This one didn't pitch in the majors in 2010, but last year, he got into 53 games with the Mets, striking out 44 while issuing 22 unintentional walks. He also posted a 4.05 ERA if you care more about ERA, which you shouldn't.

Izzy’s fastball got into the low-90s, and there’s reason to believe he could be of some use in 2012. On a minor-league contract, he’s all but risk-free. It’s kind of the same story for almost all relievers who sign minor-league contracts. Isringhausen’s backstory just happens to be a little more interesting than most. He’ll make the team, or he won’t, and in either case, other players will determine just where the Angels end up.
