No. 15 Marquette Vs. Notre Dame: Fighting Irish Catch Fire From Downtown, End Golden Eagles’ Winning Streak

The Fighting Irish ended a seven-game Marquette winning streak, as freshman Pat Connaughton caught fire and led Notre Dame to their fourth straight win.

Marquette’s seven-game Big East winning streak came to an end on Saturday afternoon, as the Golden Eagles traveled to South Bend and were knocked off by a red hot Notre Dame team. The Fighting Irish have now won four in a row, which includes wins over then-ranked conference heavyweights Syracuse, Connecticut and now Marquette. Notre Dame built their slim halftime lead to double digits from the under 12 timeout, and then cruised to a comfortable 76-59 win.

Pat Connaughton led Notre Dame with 23 points, one shy of a season-high he set back in the first week of the season. The freshman averages just over six points per game, but caught fire from outside and hit five of eight from behind the arc. As a team, the Irish hit 11 of 23 attempts for three-point range to maintain their lead throughout, and then pull away on a run in the second. Four of their five starters were in double figures, as Eric Atkins added 18 points to back up Connaughton.

Marquette, on the other hand, hit just 2 of 13 attempts from behind the arc and could not keep pace. Both teams are now even in the loss column with three a piece, trailing only league leader Syracuse.
