Fab Melo Ineligible For NCAA Tournament Because Of Academic Issue, According To Report

Syracuse center Fab Melo’s inability to participate in the NCAA Tournament is related to the same academic issue which caused him to miss three games during the regular season. This according to ESPN.com’s Dana O’Neil.

“This is an academic issue related to the first suspension,” a source told O’Neil. “He was initially cleared after the first suspension but the NCAA has since revisited the case and deemed him ineligible again.”

Melo was suspended indefinitely on Jan. 21 and missed three games before rejoining the team on Feb. 2. With Melo sidelined, Syracuse suffered its first and only loss of the regular season in a 67-58 defeat at Notre Dame on Jan. 21. The Orange then defeated Cincinnati 60-53 and West Virginia 63-61 before Melo returned.

Syracuse, the No. 1 seed in the East, begins NCAA Tournament play on Thursday against UNC-Asheville.
