On Saturday, Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco jammed his left ring finger while diving back into first base and had to leave the game against the Blue Jays.
Placido Polanco Injury: Phillies Infielder Has Sprained Finger
The good news for the Phillies is that X-rays on Polanco’s finger were negative and he’s not expected to miss too much time.
This sounds pretty bad, but might not be. Philly.com:
Third baseman Placido Polanco said X-rays of his left ring finger taken after he left Saturday’s game against Toronto were negative and categorized himself as day to day.
“It’s a little stiff today and a little swelling,” Polanco said Sunday morning. “I jammed it and it’s day to day. I just have to see how I feel every day.”
Assistant general manager Scott Proefrock described the injury as “a little sprain” and said Polanco would miss only a couple of days.
That's good news for Polanco and also good news for the Phillies, whose principal backup third baseman this season could wind up being Ty Wigginton. Wigginton's OK for a temporary replacement, but if the Phillies intend to contend, they need Polanco healthy, something he hasn't really been since returning to Philadelphia two years ago (he missed 30 games in 2010 and 40 in 2011).
And then there’s what Polanco did after seeing the jammed finger:
“When I slid, I saw it and I popped it back in because it was sticking up,” Polanco said. “It didn’t look good.“It sounds dislocated. This happened to me once. It’s not pretty, but when you see a finger sticking out at a weird angle, your first instinct is, “That has to go back where it belongs!” And so I did exactly what Polanco did. It doesn’t hurt at all... until a few hours later.
