David Wright Injury: Pinkie Fracture Sidelines Mets Third Baseman

David Wright fractured his pinkie diving back into a base, and now he’s going to miss some time, although the good news is that he won’t need surgery.

As early as it is, the New York Mets couldn't have gotten off to a better start. They showed off a re-designed Citi Field. Johan Santana looked more or less like himself on the mound. The team won its first four games. Indeed, everything was coming up Mets, which, of course, meant that it was inevitable that something wouldn't come up Mets. Now we know that something.

During a game Monday, David Wright dove back into a base. He bruised his pinkie and was scratched from Tuesday's lineup. Further investigation shows that it isn't just a bruise.

Obviously, it's good news that Wright won't need surgery. As finger injuries go, this is pretty minor. But it's not out of the question that Wright could need a stint on the disabled list, which would deal the lineup a considerable blow. Starting in Wright's place at third on Tuesday was Ronny Cedeno. We're talking about a drop-off from David Wright to Ronny Cedeno.

Wright began the season 7-for-12 with a home run. He is to be re-evaluated on Wednesday.
