Mike Fontenot Reportedly Signing With Phillies

The banged-up Philadelphia Phillies have reportedly identified some potential help in the infield, in the person of Mike Fontenot.

That picture right there is of Mike Fontenot looking sad, and he might have been looking sad because he was out of a job. Mike Fontenot went to camp as an infielder with the San Francisco Giants, but at the end of March, he got released. Pity poor Mike Fontenot.

But don't pity him too much, because Mike Fontenot (reportedly) has a job again. Shortly after Fontenot was released, there was talk that the Philadelphia Phillies were interested. Then, earlier Friday, Fontenot was supposedly choosing between the Phillies and the Atlanta Braves. Now Fontenot has chosen!

It's presently unconfirmed, but this would be a pretty lame false rumor. On a minor-league contract, Fontenot wouldn't represent a real commitment on the Phillies' part. But the Phillies have been starting Freddy Galvis at second base in the absence of Chase Utley, and Freddy Galvis can't really hit. It's a problem of his. Mike Fontenot is by no means renowned for his defense, but he has a career .332 OBP and 92 OPS+, which isn't terrible. While Fontenot's 31 and not exactly on a career upswing, it's easy to see him rising quick and joining the Phillies' big-league squad in a short amount of time.

The Phillies presumably have nice things to say about Freddy Galvis. The Phillies chose Freddy Galvis to get them this far. Now we’ll evaluate their actions. Fontenot’s going to be a pretty tempting alternative.
