Brian Wilson Injury: Giants Closer Facing Potential Elbow Surgery

Brian Wilson could be facing surgery after an MRI revealed structural damage in his elbow. The Giants will go with a closer-by-committee approach while Wilson is out.

Brian Wilson could be headed for the disabled list, according to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle. The San Francisco Giants closer reportedly felt something in his elbow during the second of two straight outings against the Colorado Rockies. An MRI showed structural damage, and Shea reports that Wilson could be facing surgery.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy was unable to put positive spin on Wilson’s condition.

”We just got some bad news on Brian Wilson. We had some tests done last night and it does show some structural issues with the elbow, so we’re going to get a second or even a third opinion with Brian. There are definitely some issues there. ...

“Initially, I was just being optimistic that he would be fine, but after the tests done yesterday, it doesn’t look very good right now.”

Wilson has already undergone Tommy John surgery once in his career, and his season will end prematurely if he's forced to do it again. In the meantime, Bochy said the Giants would try to make up for Wilson's absence with a by-committee approach, using primarily Santiago Casilla, Sergio Romo and Javier Lopez.
