Brad Lidge Injury Forces Co-Closer To Disabled List

Brad Lidge has been one of the Washington Nationals’ closers this season, but now he’s going to be sidelined with an abdominal strain.

Presswire

You see that picture right there? That's not a good picture for a pitcher. It might be appropriate for Brad Lidge, though, as the Nationals' reliever has struggled to get going early in 2012. And now he's going to get some time to think about everything he's done, and everything he could've done, according to Amanda Comak:

This is one of those injuries that could linger if it's not managed properly, so Lidge and the Nationals will take care to manage it properly. This isn't quite as huge news as Friday's announcement that the Nationals are disabling Ryan Zimmerman and promoting Bryce Harper. Here the Nationals are disabling Brad Lidge and promoting Ryan Perry. The Nationals aren't actually disabling Ryan Zimmerman and Brad Lidge. That would be bad for the team morale, and for the team. But they're on the disabled *list*.

In seven innings over seven appearances, Lidge has amassed seven hits, seven walks, and seven strikeouts. And four runs allowed. Sorry for breaking the symmetry. He has two saves to his name as the Nationals’ co-closer, but now Henry Rodriguez will take over as the full closer. Rodriguez already has five saves of his own, and hasn’t allowed a run in nine games. The Nationals would presumably prefer that Lidge not be hurt, but it’s doubtful they’re going to miss him too bad.
