Josh Hamilton has been one of the keys to the Texas Rangers' blistering start in 2012, but his career has always been pockmarked by injury. The latest came Sunday night against the Tampa Bay Rays: Hamilton left the game with back stiffness, and is day-to-day according to ESPN's Steve Berthiaume.

Hamilton started and rapped an RBI single, but hurt his back sliding into second base in the first inning, came out for the second inning, and was subsequently pulled after it stiffened up. He was replaced by David Murphy.

Hamilton has been superb for the Rangers so far this year, as they have raced out to a franchise-best 16-5 start. He was hitting .395 entering Sunday night’s game, with nine home runs and 25 RBI, and was anchoring an attack that ranked first in MLB in runs, batting average, on-base percentage and slugging.
