Peter O’Malley Interested In Buying San Diego Padres

The former Dodgers owner could return to baseball ownership two hours down the road from Los Angeles.

Peter O'Malley once owned the Los Angeles Dodgers, taking over when his father Walter passed away in 1979. He was one of the unsuccessful bidders in the court-ordered sale of the Dodgers, which is expected to close on Tuesday.

But the O’Malley family might return to baseball ownership with a different team. Ken Rosenthal:

O’Malley, his son Kevin and nephew Tom Seidler are mounting an aggressive push for the San Diego Padres and want to close a deal by the All-Star break, sources say.

The O’Malley group has signed documents permitting it access to team financial information, sources say, and apparently has raised sufficient equity to purchase the club.

Current Padres ownership was prepared earlier this year to sell to a group headed by Jeff Moorad, but that deal fell through:

Padres majority owner John Moores had a deal in place to sell the team to minority owner Jeff Moorad for $500 million, but that agreement fell apart in January. Soon after that, Moorad resigned as the team’s CEO.For more on the Padres, please visit Gaslamp Ball.
