Miguel Olivo Headed To Disabled List With Groin Injury

The Mariners are likely losing starting catcher Miguel Olivo to the DL after an injury suffered Monday night.

Presswire

Miguel Olivo started and played most of the Mariners' 3-2, 12-inning loss to the Rays Monday night. He even hit a home run in the game, his third of the season, off Tampa Bay's Jeremy Hellickson.

Unfortunately, in the ninth inning he suffered an injury that could put him on the disabled list. Larry Stone:

Miguel Olivo's groin injury is serious enough that he's headed for the disabled list. Eric Wedge, who had his door closed after the game, presumably discussing things with Jack Zduriencik on the phone (the GM is not on the trip), said the current plan is to split the catching duties between Jesus Montero and John Jaso while Olivo is out. He also said there's a good chance that Mike Carp will come up to take Olivo's roster spot.

A disappointed Olivo said his foot caught in the turf as he made the play on a nubber in front of the plate, and he knew right away it was pretty bad. He hurt his groin in spring training last year and said this felt worse. He missed three weeks with that injury.

The Mariners would perhaps be best served by giving Montero the job; Montero is 9-for-20 with three home runs while playing catcher, but hitting just .197/.206/.246 in 61 at-bats as the Mariners’ DH. Small sample size and all, but sometimes players hit better when they’re playing a different position in the field.
