Cardinals Will Retire Tony La Russa’s Number 10
Next Friday -- no, not this Friday; next Friday -- the St. Louis Cardinals will officially retire Tony La Russa's number (10) in a ceremony that will highlight the ex-manager's 16 seasons, which included nine postseason berths and two World's Championships.

La Russa, now serving for Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig, has accepted the club’s invitation to attend what is believed to be an elaborate ceremony remember TLR’s 16-year term with the franchise.

La Russa’s No. 10 becomes the 13th retired by the club. Ozzie Smith (1), Schoendienst, Stan Musial (6), Jackie Robinson/Bruce Sutter (42), Enos Slaughter (9), Boyer, Dizzy Dean (17), Herzog, Lou Brock (20), Bob Gibson (45) and former chairman August A. Busch (85) are the others.
Red Schoendienst, Ken Boyer and White Herzog also managed the Redbirds, though only Herzog was honored solely for his time as the club’s skipper.
Thirteen retired numbers seems like a lot of retired numbers, but it's not the most, as the Yankees have retired 15 numbers. That number will soon rise to 17, with #2 (Derek Jeter) and #42 (Mariano Rivera / Jackie Robinson) coming off the board when their wearers hang up the spikes. Oh, and there's also Andy Pettitte's #46 and Jorge Posada's #20. Depending on how things go, those are retirement candidates, too.
