Chris Iannetta Out 6-8 Weeks Following Wrist Surgery

Angels catcher Chris Iannetta sustained a wrist injury while catching Jered Weaver’s no-hitter, and now he’ll miss a lot of time due to surgery.

Presswire

If one had asked Angels catcher Chris Iannetta the morning of May 2 whether he'd be willing to take a wrist injury if it meant he could catch a no-hitter, Iannetta probably would've said something like "yeah, of course!" It's a rare thrill to catch a no-hitter, and the overwhelming majority of backstops go their entire careers without doing it.

Well Iannetta caught a no-hitter on May 2, when Jered Weaver dominated the Twins. Afterward Iannetta and Weaver shared a touching mound embrace. During that game, Iannetta sustained a wrist injury. Now he needs to get it taken care of.

I wonder now if Iannetta would prefer the injury and the no-hitter, or no injury and no no-hitter. What he'd probably really prefer is no injury and the no-hitter, but what kind of world does Chris Iannetta think we live in? This isn't a world where you can get whatever you want. There are prices, there are consequences.

So Iannetta - the Angels' regular backstop - is out for a while. That's rough news for a struggling lineup, as Iannetta owns a 102 OPS+. Bobby Wilson should get a lot of time in his stead, as could Hank Conger although he's been on the disabled list in the minors. The thing about Bobby Wilson is that he's hit .208/.271/.331 in the majors and isn't likely to approximate Iannetta's offensive value over the coming weeks. Not that catcher is where the Angels want to get their productivity. They have these other guys, guys who've hit pretty well in the past.
