Jeff Niemann will miss most of the 2012 season with a broken fibula.

Smart alecks like me love to trade away the pitching depth that other teams have built up. What are the Braves going to do with all of those starters? Why can't the Rays trade some of their pitchers for a catcher or shortstop?

That's why. Jeff Niemann was off to a solid start for the Tampa Bay Rays, with a 3.48 ERA in six starts and a 30/11 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 33 innings. But on Monday night, the right-hander was hit in the leg with a comebacker in the first inning against the Blue Jays in Toronto:

Niemann finished the inning, but he left the game, and x-rays showed a fracture to his fibula.

The silver lining is that the Rays have that aforementioned depth, and they can call on either Alex Cobb or Wade Davis to fill in for the next few months.
