Padres Designate Orlando Hudson For Assignment

Orlando Hudson is having a bad offensive season, and the Padres decided it’s time to cut ties with him.

The San Diego Padres signed Orlando Hudson to a two-year, $11.5 million contract before the 2011 season.

This turned out to be not a great idea. Hudson posted a .681 OPS (94 OPS+) in 2011, and was declining this year, hitting .211/.260/.317 through 35 games and 123 at-bats (63 OPS+). The Padres decided on Thursday that they’d had enough:

The Padres owe Hudson about $6 million -- about $4 million left on this year’s contract, and a $2 million buyout of a 2013 team option. And all this on a day when this was tweeted:

Hudson has 91 career home runs. Oh, and as of Thursday he’s also leading the National League in triples, with five.
