The Detroit Tigers' Justin Verlander has thrown two no-hitters in his career already.

Friday night in Detroit, he's making a bid for his third in an interleague game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Through six innings, he had issued just one walk, to Neil Walker in the first inning, and since had retired 17 straight hitters. Verlander threw just 66 pitches in the first six innings, 47 of them strikes.

Leading off the top of the seventh, Walker fouled off a number of pitches and then was called out on strikes by C.B. Bucknor, and wasn’t happy about the pitch, which appeared to be a bit low on replays.

The second hitter of the inning was Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen; McCutchen drew the second Pittsburgh walk of the game on a 98 mile-per-hour fastball.

Pedro Alvarez grounded right to Prince Fielder at first base; Fielder couldn't throw fast enough to second and McCutchen advanced.

Verlander struck out Garrett Jones on a nasty breaking ball to end the inning and have his no-hitter intact through seven.
