On Saturday, Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Mark Ellis needed to undergo emergency surgery to relieve pressure in his leg. Ellis had suffered a leg injury on Friday night, when Tyler Greene of the St. Louis Cardinals slid into him in a play at second base.

Ellis showed up to the clubhouse on Saturday and said his leg was still bothering him. After going to the hospital, the extent of the injury necessitated surgery to relieve pressure and drain his leg. Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times reports that the leg injury was much more serious than either Ellis or the Dodgers first imagined.

Trainer Sue Falsone said that if pressure hadn’t been released from the lower half of Ellis’ left leg, his muscles could have been permanently damaged.
The incision on Ellis’ leg, which is several inches long, will not be closed until Tuesday because doctors want to continue to drain it of blood and fluids.

Buster Olney of ESPN reported that had the injury gone untreated for another four or five hours, Ellis may very well have lost his leg.

The Dodgers have had rough luck with injuries, despite continuing to win ballgames. Ellis is the fourth Dodger player currently on the disabled list.
