Tony Gwynn had a magnificent major-league career, winning eight batting titles with a lifetime total of 3,141 hits. He’s a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Since his playing career ended he’s been the baseball coach at his alma mater, San Diego State.

Now, there’s a report that Gwynn will be part of a group that is trying to purchase his former team, the San Diego Padres:

Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn is joining with movie producer Thomas Tull in an attempt to buy the San Diego Padres.

Gwynn said Monday that it's too early to say what his role will be, beyond offering advice and insight, while stressing that he's still the coach at his alma mater, San Diego State.

Gwynn met with Tull in San Diego last week and said he's spoken with him several times since.

Tull is the chairman and CEO of Legendary Entertainment, which has produced movie hits such as “The Dark Knight,” “Inception,” “Clash of the Titans” and “300.”

A possible deal to sell the Padres to former sports agent Jeff Moorad fell through earlier this year when MLB owners wouldn’t approve Moorad as principal owner. That sale would have been worth about $500 million; the Padres have since worked out a new TV deal with Fox that could increase the amount a group would have to pay for the team.
