The Kansas City Royals opened the season with Yuniesky Betancourt and Chris Getz sharing second-base duties, with young Johnny Giavotella sent back to triple-A Omaha. Betancourt got hurt, and Getz took over. Monday night against the Yankees, though, Getz left the game after aggravating a rib injury he initially suffered last week in a collision with Chris Davis.

According to Bob Dutton, Getz has been placed on the 15-day Disabled List. The Royals called up a relief pitcher from the minors to fill Getz’s roster spot, so Giavotella -- who’s been on the roster lately, but hasn’t played much -- might finally get another shot at playing regularly.
Or he might not. Monday, Getz's spot was taken by 28-year-old rookie Irving Falu, who presumably is considered the superior defender. And manager Ned Yost has been stressing defense at second base all season.
